About Us

Our group

The Sligo Neolithic Landscapes group was formed in 2015 in recognition of the threats to the unique Neolithic monuments and landscapes of county Sligo. SNL are a PPN group, part of a network of over 400 community and voluntary organisations aiming to effect positive change in Sligo.

The members of our steering committee include Sligo-based professionals from the fields of archaeology, history and heritage, and key representatives from farming and the local community. The founding group (pictured here) is united by passion and curiosity, and an awareness of the value of these ancient resources.

Our Objectives

  • Through the mechanism of UNESCO WHS status, to create a stable, well-informed, long-term sustainable plan for the preservation and communication of Sligo’s Neolithic heritage.

  • To raise awareness of damage or potential threats to the Neolithic monuments in County Sligo.

  • To enthuse and inform the people of County Sligo regarding their unique inheritance.

  • To bring together a large, wide-based group, to support the sustainable tourism potential of Sligo as part of an integrated long-term plan, and to express the feelings of local people concerned as to the future survival of the ancient places.

Sligo Neolithic Landscapes Group would like to warmly thank expert archaeological photographer Ken Williams, who kindly provided the spectacular photographs of Neolithic monuments used in this website. Thanks also to Joe Hunt for the dramatic drone image used on the 'Landscapes' page. Many thanks especially to Eugene & Maelbha of 54 Degrees for their skilled work creating this beautiful website.
